Bernard Foong - Bio

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Chinese parents, his early years were spent assisting his aunt and cousin learning the art of sewing and fabrics/colors matching. At the age of ten, he attended an exclusive private boarding school in England. Obtaining his Diploma in Fashion Design at the Harrow College of Art & Technology in London, England. He went on to complete his Master of Design at the Royal College of Art & Design, London, England soon after. During his college years he worn several international fashion awards and was already retailing bridal and evening dresses to several well known department stores in England. Liberty's, Selfridges, Harrods and Harvey Nichols to name a few that carried his designs. His Royal College of Art graduation wedding/evening wear collection were sold to Liberty's, London and were displayed in all their store windows for an entire month.

For a period of four years, he worked for Liberty's bridal department as their in-house designer until on a trip to Hong Kong, while working on a freelance project for 'Bird's' (casual wear) company, he was recruited by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as their Fashion Design, Pattern Making & History of Costume lecturer for the next 6 years. During his stay in Hong Kong, he worked as a freelance designer for numerous fashion companies. Designing casual wear, swimwear, lingerie, and fur garments, men’s wear, bridal and evening wear to accessories (bags, shoes, headdresses). He also participated and organized many fashion shows, events, functions, and presentations in the Asia Pacific region.

He was then recruited by Keys Far East Limited (an established lingerie company in Hong Kong) to head their design department. He traveled extensively to the United States with this job. He was an Associate Fashion Design/Illustration Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and lecturer at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design for a period of two years.

Moving back to a warmer climate, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Bernard was appointed as the Fashion Development Manager to assist the well-established department store, Parkson Grand (with 22 stores in Malaysia). Producing under the label, Natural Life by Bernard Foong, he marketed his casual collections at Parkson Grand's flagship store. After a couple of years working for this corporate company, he was invited by the Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore to join their design school to help establish a new Fashion Design department. On contract for two years, he assisted several founding members of the design school to work on the fashion department's teaching curriculum.

The Fitzgerald Theatre Department, University of Hawaii, Manoa, Oahu, Hawaii awarded a full scholarship to Bernard to complete his second Master of Art in Theatre Costuming. Moving to the island of Maui, he is now a permanent resident. He has assisted many charity organizations in their fund raising events with his fashion and performance arts shows/presentations. In 2005, he and his partner, Mr. Walter Jay Bissett, together with several partners, opened Fire Dragon Bistro Orient & Design Shop.

He currently retails and wholesales his Specialty and Ready to Wear - 'Bernard Foong' and 'Fire Dragon by Bernard Foong' labels on Maui and internationally. He also designs costumes/fashions for numerous theatrical productions on top of organizing charity fashion events.

October 2006, Bernard showed his one-of-a-kind dresses at 'Premiere' America's Mart fashion trade fair. He currently wholesales this line to Azina Zakia Boutique in Atlanta, Oh So Posh Boutique and Janet Marie Studios - both in Florida. He also provides custom made outfits for clients world-wide.

The beginning January 2007, Mr. Foong showcased his R-T-W Fall/Winter 2007-08 collection at Hong Kong Fashion Week which he garnered positive interest in many Asian press reviews of his work, including a China nationwide television broadcast of his latest collection.

Besides designing specialty fashions for his private clients and specialty boutiques, he is now the chief lingerie and sleepwear designer for Cerie International Limited - Hong Kong. His lingerie designs can be found at La Senza, Canada and also Ann Summers –United Kingdom this coming 2007 Holiday season. Commuting between Maui, Hawaii and Hong Kong, China he now splits his time between these two cities.

He continues to showcase the 'Bernard Foong' R-T-W collections in Hong Kong and is currently working on the Bernard Foong @ Modern Classic Ltd. (an established Hong Kong bridal & evening wear company) collections.

His recent bridal/evening/bridal lingerie fashion show, "Grace" was premiered at Hong Kong Fashion Week (Spring/Summer 2008 collections) - July 10th to 14th 2007 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center, Wanchai, Hong Kong.
